In 2026, supermarkets could close on Sundays: Coop's proposal aims to reduce costs and improve the well-being of workers. Find out what will change for households and consumption.

Imagine an ordinary Sunday morning: you wake up, prepare your shopping list and, once you arrive at the supermarket, find the shutter down.
What for years has been considered an indispensable service for millions of Italian families, is now being questioned.

In 2026, thanks to almost zero economic growth (just 0.2% of GDP expected) and slow-motion consumption, the large large-scale retail chains are considering a historic change: closing supermarkets on Sundays.

Coop proposes Sunday closure to save money and protect workers

According to Coop, returning to six days of weekly opening could generate savings of between 2.3 and 2.6 billion euros nationwide.
The reason? The 30% increase on the holiday salary has a heavy impact on personnel costs.
